National Cowboy Museum Announces
53rd Anniversary Western Heritage Award Winners, 2014
(Literary, Music, Television and Film)


OKLAHOMA CITY---America's premier Western Museum, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, celebrates its 53rd anniversary Western Heritage Awards with the announcement of the winners in literature, music, film and television. The awards reflect the significant stories of the American West and the winners will be honored at a banquet on April 12, 2014 where each honoree receives a Wrangler, an impressive bronze sculpture of a cowboy on horseback. Nominations are accepted from the public and judged by qualified professionals, outside of the Museum staff and Board of Directors.

Literary Award---Outstanding Juvenile Book

There are seven winning categories in the literary competition. They include Western novel, nonfiction book, art book, photography book, juvenile book, magazine article and poetry book.Grandma’s Santo on Its Head/El santo patas arriba de mi abuelita: Stories of Days Gone By in Hispanic Villages of New Mexico is the Outstanding Juvenile Book written by Nasario García. The short stories, published by University of New Mexico Press, are based on popular cuentos that parents and grandparents in rural New Mexico once upon a time told their children. They are a rich source of the folklore and Spanish language of the region and offer satisfying entertainment. In this collection of bilingual stories (English & Spanish) about the Rio Puerco Valley of northern New Mexico, where García grew up, he shares the traditions, myths and stories of his homeland.
